People often ask what is in the green bags. The answer is deliberately unexciting.
Five kilogrammes of maize flour, three of beans, two of rice, a litre of cooking oil, salt, sugar and two bars of soap. Together that will carry a household of five for roughly two weeks if it is used carefully, which in our experience it always is.
We have resisted the temptation to make the parcels more elaborate. Staples keep. They can be stretched, shared with a neighbour, or cooked into whatever else the garden produced that week. Novelty items cannot.
What we have changed is the frequency. A single parcel solves a fortnight. It does not solve a year. Households in our care now receive support on a schedule they can plan around, alongside a route into skilling so that the schedule eventually becomes unnecessary.
That is the intention behind every distribution: to make ourselves gradually less needed.
